Instructors & Hosts

Sean Campbell

Instructor & Host

Sean has been weaving tree nets since teaching himself during the pandemic after years of being inspired by hidden net hangouts from his youth. What started as building nets for friends grew into teaching online and hosting in-person workshops and retreats around the world. This retreat is part of that same thread; learning by doing in good company in a place that supports the work.

Luca Berra

Host & Owner

Luca is an architect, bespoke designer, and vivid dreamer deeply in love with nature. Drawing on international experience managing luxury hotel projects in the Americas, he is now the owner of Campo di Bonis. Here, he applies his background in restoration and design to build and shape a dedicated gathering place for nature lovers.

Alberto Broggi

Host

Alberto is a sailor, snowboard teacher, and host based in northeastern Italy. He found tree net weaving through Sean’s online course and quickly began building nets locally, including projects near Trieste and at Campo di Bonis. With a background in adventure tourism, hospitality, and property management, Alberto brings a practical, place-based approach to hosting, helping make this retreat feel rooted, well-supported, and connected to the land and local community.

Getting There

Casa Narauni - Campo Di Bonis, 4, 33040 Taipana UD, Italy

Location: Our home base, Campo di Bonis lies about a 45 minute drive outside of Udine, so to keep it simple, we'll be organizing a free transfer there and back from the Udine train station:

V.le Europa Unita, 37, 33100 Udine UD, Italy

Flying In: If you're coming from out of the country, Venice (VCE) and Trieste (TRS) are both easy airports to fly into with Trieste being the closest and Venice being the more connected option. Trieste is only 45 minutes by train while Venice is about a 2-3 hours. Alternatively, you can coordinate to possibly rent a car from Venice which would take 1-1.5 hours. If you're not sure what to do, reach out and we'll help you figure it out.

When to Arrive: We know airplanes, trains and buses can arrive at all different times, but if possible, please aim for 2-5pm on Wednesday April 22nd so we have time to get you up the mountain in time for the welcome dinner. If you have to arrive later for whatever reason, let us know and we can accommodate.

If you have any questions, or your flights/trains shift, or anything else, feel free to email me (Sean) below and I'll be happy to assist!

Detailed Timeline

Think of this as a working outline rather than a fixed schedule. We expect to adapt along the way, based on weather, the group's energy and how the work unfolds.

  • Wednesday April 22nd - Arrival & Welcome - Group transfer from Udine, settle into rooms, and a shared meal so everyone gets to meet each other.

  • Thursday April 23rd - Acclimation and Begin Weaving - A slow morning to explore the surroundings, followed by an introduction to weaving and our first hands-on session, ending with a relaxed barbecue dinner.

  • Friday April 24th - Continuing the Weave - A full day of weaving with time for practice, exploration, and rest woven throughout. Afternoon reserved as free time to either continue weaving, embark on an adventure or rest.

  • Saturday April 25th - Workshop Arrival & Expanding the Build - Weekend workshop participants arrive in the morning and join the build as the group expands into a more social and collaborative phase. We’ll continue weaving, refining techniques, and open up space in the afternoon to enjoy the surroundings before a celebratory barbecue dinner together.

  • Sunday April 26th - Final Weaving & Departure - A final morning to wrap up any remaining work, revisit key techniques, and spend time relaxing on the net. We’ll share a closing lunch together before departing and heading back to Udine.

Group size is intentionally small to allow for hands-on instruction, shared meals, and a relaxed pace throughout the retreat.

Optional Activities & Surroundings

In addition to weaving, the valley offers plenty of options. Each day will include focused instruction followed by open blocks of time where you’re welcome to keep weaving, explore the surroundings, or take a rest.

On and Around the Property

  • Heated jacuzzi
  • Access to a natural freshwater spring
  • A small private 3-hole golf course and practice area
  • Outdoor volleyball court
  • Ping pong

Exploring the Area

  • Forest roads and trails for hiking and mountain biking

Things Nearby

  • Tour of mountain dairy where they produce goat milk and cheese
  • Horseback riding at a local riding center (please let us know in advance if interested)

None of these are scheduled activities. They're simply part of the setting and available if/when it feels right.

Meals and Drinks

MealsAll meals are included. Simple breakfasts will be prepared by hosts while lunches and dinners will be prepared by a local nonna from the area. Meals will draw from the traditional cuisine of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with dishes such as frico, lasagne, prosciutto and Montasio cheese

Friday evening will be a relaxed barbecue night, hosted by Luca.

If you have any dietary restrictions please let us know in advance and we will do our best to accommodate.

Drinks: We’ll have a small selection of local Friulian wines and regional beers available throughout the retreat, meant for relaxed sipping with meals.

You can expect classic regional wines like Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, along with a light red such as Refosco, depending on availability. Local beers from the Friuli region will also be on hand.

Coffee, tea, and non-alcoholic options will be available as well.

You’re also welcome to bring anything special you’d like to enjoy or share with the group.

Curriculum Overview

Over the course of the retreat, we'll build a waist high tree net as a team from start to finish, making sure to cover:

  • Mastering the Basic Knots - How to tie each of the 6 knots we'll use in weaving a tree net.

  • Tree Protection - How to work with living trees responsibly, including tree protection techniques and perimeter planning.

  • Establishing and Tensioning the Perimeter - Laying out, tying, and tensioning a strong, clean perimeter as the foundation of the net.

  • Weaving Chaos and Strips Pattern - How to weave each and when to use them.

  • Subdividing and Managing Larger Nets - Breaking the net into workable sections so multiple people can weave efficiently at the same time.

  • Side Walls, Climbing Rings and Portals - Designing and weaving side walls, rings and portals to climb up and into the net.

  • Finishing Techniques and Design Principles - Cleaning up loose ends, refining tension, and discussing broader net design considerations drawn from past builds.

While we’ll make sure to touch on all of these elements, the retreat is structured to let topics arise naturally through the process of building a net together with plenty of room for questions and experimentation along the way.

Weather & Time of Year

We expect the temperatures in the valley this time of year to average 13-18°C (55-65°) with it being warmer in the sun and cooler in the shade. That means comfortable working temperatures in the day but be prepared for it to get colder at night. There is some chance of rain but only as light showers that won't last too long.

What to Bring / Wear

We'll be on our feet outside for long periods of time, so make sure to wear good shoes, comfortable work clothes and bring a raincoat in case we do get any precipitation.

Other things you might want to bring are a bathing suit, hiking shoes, and something nice to read etc

Don't worry about towels and sheets. Those will be provided.

Any special tools/materials? Nope! All you need to bring is yourself and a willingness to learn. We'll provide the rest.

Money, Payments & Next Steps

We will discuss the best way to pay the remaining balance when I reach out to say hi and then I will email over a secure link through my learning platform (Thinkific) just like the deposit so you can pay via PayPal, Stripe or credit card.

Reminder that the deadline for this is April 15th.

Refund & Cancellation Policy

The deposit is non-refundable and reserves your spot in the retreat or workshop.

Any remaining balance payments are refundable up until April 15th. After that date, refunds are dependent on whether your spot can be filled by another participant. If your spot is filled, we’re happy to issue a refund.

If the retreat is canceled by the organizer for any reason, all payments will be fully refunded.

If you have concerns or special circumstances, please reach out. I aim to handle things reasonably and case by case wherever possible.

How to Reach Me

I'll reach out to you within 1-2 days of receiving the deposit, but if you have any questions at all, I'm here to help. Feel free to send me (Sean) an email at the address below anytime. I'm happy to help!
